To check FCRA renewal status, open the official FCRA portal, select Track Application and access the renewal record using the details requested. Then check certificate validity separately through Validate FCRA Certificate and review any messages in the organisation’s login. A pending application or payment receipt does not, by itself, establish that registration remains valid.
This guide helps NGO teams check progress, identify a response due to MHA and keep evidence of the result. It does not check any particular organisation’s account.
FCRA renewal status: the practical answers
Short answer: Track your FC-3C renewal application on the FCRA portal, and check your certificate’s validity as a separate step. A certificate is valid for five years, and the Act asks you to apply for renewal within six months before it expires. MHA’s 30 September 2025 notice asks associations to apply no later than four months before expiry. Do not treat a payment receipt or a pending application as proof that registration is still valid; read any order or notice that covers your case.
- Who this page is for
- FCRA-registered NGOs that have filed, or are about to file, a renewal on Form FC-3C.
- Who should look elsewhere
- An NGO applying for FCRA for the first time needs FCRA registration or prior permission, not renewal. If you only want to know whether the pending Amendment Bill changes anything, see the FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 guide.
- What to prepare
- The submitted FC-3C, its acknowledgement and payment record, the current certificate, any renewal or extension order, and access to the organisation’s portal login and registered email. MHA says a Darpan ID is mandatory for all online FCRA services.
- What happens next
- The Act says renewal is ordinarily decided within ninety days, but that is not a guarantee. The FCRA Amendment Rules, 2026, in force since 22 June 2026, link renewal to utilising at least ₹10 lakh of foreign contribution over the preceding two financial years. If MHA raises a query, answer it through the portal and save the acknowledgement.

Keep these records ready
Have the submitted Form FC-3C, acknowledgement, payment receipt, existing FCRA certificate and any subsequent renewal or extension order available. Keep the application reference, MHA file number where allotted, and FCRA registration number separately labelled. Use the identifier requested on the particular screen; these numbers serve different purposes.
For the next renewal, the FCRA Readiness Checklist & Document Pack includes a document checklist for FC-3C and a compliance calendar to plan ahead.
The authorised staff member should also be able to access the organisation’s portal account and registered email. Keep passwords and one-time codes with authorised users, rather than including them in a shared compliance spreadsheet.
How to check FCRA renewal status online
1. Start from the official portal
Open FCRA Online. You can also reach the service through the Ministry of Home Affairs FCRA page. The portal lists Track Application, Validate FCRA Certificate and Technical Helpdesk as separate services.
2. Open the renewal application record
Select Track Application and follow the renewal/FC-3C route offered on the live screen. Enter the requested reference or sign in when prompted. For account-specific correspondence, use the organisation’s existing login under the registered-association services. Menu layout and authentication screens may change, so follow the current labels.
Match the record to the acknowledgement before interpreting the result. A reference copied from a different application, such as registration or a change-intimation filing, can lead you to the wrong record.
3. Read the progress entry and outstanding messages
Record the displayed position and check whether MHA has requested a clarification or document. Read the full message and its response deadline. Also check the registered email, including spam folders, for an alert. Do not assume that a brief tracking result contains every action required.
4. Verify the certificate separately
Return to Validate FCRA Certificate. The published certificate-verification screen asks for the FCRA registration number and an access code. Check that the returned organisation details match yours and retain the result with its check date.
Compare the result with the certificate and any applicable order. Application tracking answers “what is happening to our renewal?”; certificate verification helps answer “what registration position is recorded?” If the records conflict, raise a specific enquiry rather than choosing whichever result appears more favourable.
5. Save the decision or response evidence
If renewal has been granted, obtain the issued certificate or order and check its validity dates and conditions. Update the compliance calendar and provide the relevant document to your bank through its required process. For banking records, see our FCRA account and utilisation-account guide.
If you submit a clarification, save both the response and its acknowledgement. A document on your computer is not evidence that it reached the portal successfully.
What should you do with the result?
The situations below are a working guide, not a reproduction of every portal status label. Read the actual message and order in your case.
| Situation | What to establish | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Saved form or payment uncertainty | Whether FC-3C was successfully submitted and payment completed. | Compare the submitted form, payment result and acknowledgement. Resolve a discrepancy before treating the application as filed. |
| Application pending | Whether a decision or clarification is outstanding. | Check messages, response deadlines and certificate validity separately. |
| Clarification requested | The exact question, required evidence and due date. | Prepare a complete response and submit through the specified portal route. |
| Renewal granted | The issued certificate’s dates and conditions. | Save the document and update the bank, board records and calendar as appropriate. |
| Refusal, expiry or another adverse order | The order’s effect and any available remedy. | Read the full order promptly and obtain case-specific advice before further foreign-contribution transactions. |
| No record or technical error | Whether the identifier, service or portal access is the problem. | Check the reference and use the official helpdesk if the problem persists. |
MHA’s FCRA FAQ (published on the FCRA Online portal) states that a renewal application is completed only after successful payment of the fee. A bank debit alone should therefore be reconciled with the portal’s payment and submission records; it is not a renewal certificate.
Does a pending renewal extend FCRA validity?
Do not assume an automatic extension. MHA’s 30 September 2025 renewal advisory explains that registration can cease at expiry while an application remains pending, preventing receipt and utilisation of foreign contribution until renewal is granted.
Where an extension notice or organisation-specific order is being relied upon, read the complete document. Check the category of organisations covered, filing conditions, end date and any provision that ends the extension when the application is decided. Retain a short note explaining why it applies to your NGO.
This guide does not assign a common extension date to all organisations. A headline, an old circular or another NGO’s renewal outcome cannot establish your own validity. If expiry has passed, identify the current legal basis before continuing to receive or use foreign contribution.
How to respond when MHA asks for clarification
MHA’s 13 December 2024 public notice says application clarifications are raised through the portal, with email alerts. It directs applicants to respond there and warns that missing or incomplete replies can lead to denial. Sending a paper reply does not replace the required online response.
Build a small response file before uploading. Number each question, identify the supporting document and name the person responsible for checking it. Explain a discrepancy directly rather than uploading a large collection of unrelated records.
For example, if the query concerns a mismatch in the organisation’s name, your working note should identify the two names shown, the records containing them and the evidence explaining the change or error. The response should address the question actually asked.
Before submission, check that scans are readable, dates and signatures are present where required, and every question has an answer. After submission, retain the acknowledgement and schedule a follow-up check. These are suggested office controls, not additional statutory forms.
What if the website fails or the status does not change?
A timeout or empty result does not tell you whether renewal has been approved or refused. Recheck the official address, selected service and reference entered. Use account recovery where available if access credentials are the issue. Avoid creating a duplicate renewal application merely to test whether the portal is working.
Use the official FCRA technical helpdesk for unresolved access or display problems. Its help page describes complaint registration, ticket replies and closure. Keep the ticket reference so a later follow-up can be tied to the original issue.
A useful enquiry includes the organisation’s name, relevant application reference, date and time of the problem, the screen or service affected, and the exact error. Add a screenshot showing the issue while excluding passwords and one-time codes. State what you need clarified in one sentence. A helpdesk ticket does not itself extend validity or a response deadline.
Maintain a simple renewal follow-up log
| Record | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Last check | Date, staff member and the exact result observed. |
| Validity evidence | Certificate dates and the specific order or notice relied upon. |
| Outstanding query | Message date, response deadline and documents still needed. |
| Submission evidence | Response date, acknowledgement and saved copy of attachments. |
| Next action | Named owner, target date and any helpdesk ticket reference. |
Have a second responsible person review the log when a decision, query or expiry issue affects operations. Add the next action to your NGO compliance calendar, so monitoring does not depend on one person remembering to log in.
Frequently asked questions
Is renewal guaranteed within 90 days?
No. Section 16 of the FCRA provides for renewal ordinarily within 90 days and for communicating reasons when it is not renewed within that period. It does not create automatic approval when 90 days pass. Check the actual decision and validity position. General information only, not legal advice.
When should an NGO apply for renewal?
Prepare ahead of the six-month pre-expiry renewal window. MHA’s September 2025 advisory asks associations to apply well in advance and no later than four months before expiry. Put the preparation and submission dates in the calendar; do not plan around the last day of validity. General information only, not legal advice.
Can I rely on an email saying renewal is approved?
Use it as a prompt to check the official record and obtain the issued document. Confirm the organisation’s identity, validity period and conditions before changing internal records or giving assurance to a donor. General information only, not legal advice.
Do the FCRA Amendment Bill proposals decide our renewal status?
Check the law, rules and orders currently applicable to your organisation. Our FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 guide explains the distinction between proposed changes and Rules already in force. A proposal is not an organisation-specific renewal decision. General information only, not legal advice.
How long is an FCRA certificate valid after renewal?
The Act says a certificate is valid for five years (section 12(6)), and a renewed certificate is also granted for five years (section 16(3)). Your certificate shows the exact dates, so check them on the official portal instead of working them out from memory. General information only, not legal advice.
