Rainforest Trust Feasibility and Protected Area Creation Awards: Who Can Apply
Short answer: Rainforest Trust funds Feasibility Awards and Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards for legally registered NGOs authorised to work in the project country. Feasibility Awards average USD 10,000 (exceptional cases above USD 20,000 may be considered). Creation awards have no set maximum. Awards under USD 250,000 are rolling; awards of USD 250,000 and above use 1 March, 1 July and 1 October deadlines (next after 23 Oct 2026: 1 March 2027). Start with a concept note. Funding is not guaranteed.
Practical answers before you start
Who should apply: a legally registered NGO whose primary objective is to create or expand a protected or conserved area that protects Critically Endangered or Endangered species populations and/or tropical or sub-tropical high-integrity forests and/or habitats critical for climate mitigation (for example peat swamps or mangroves), with government and Indigenous Peoples / local community support and FPIC in place or clearly planned.
Who should skip this fund: groups seeking general livelihood, education or routine NGO operating grants; projects whose main ask is long-term ecological monitoring or research; large-scale tree-planting or habitat restoration as the core activity; and anyone asked to pay a consultant or intermediary just to apply — Rainforest Trust states you never need to pay one.
Documents and setup to keep ready:
- Proof your organisation is legally registered and authorised to work in the project country
- A clear site description showing the area is currently unprotected under Rainforest Trust’s criteria
- Evidence or a credible plan for government support and for Indigenous Peoples / local community support with FPIC
- A concise concept note (submitted first through the official form); a full detailed application comes only if you are invited
What happens after you submit a concept note: concept notes are accepted anytime and reviewed within 1–2 months. If the concept note is successful, Rainforest Trust invites a detailed application through its online portal. Selection is Rainforest Trust’s decision alone.

What “protected or conserved area creation” actually means here
Rainforest Trust is looking for work whose primary objective is creating or expanding a protected or conserved area — not a general conservation education project, and not monitoring or restoration as the main ask. The proposed area must be currently unprotected in the funder’s sense: listed protection under WDPA IUCN categories 1–6 matters; Biosphere Reserve, World Heritage or Ramsar listing alone is not treated as official protection on the apply page.
Government support and Indigenous Peoples / local community support with free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) are required. Marine protected areas and IP/LC land-tenure strategies sit under separate criteria on the same official page — read those sections if that is your route.
Eligibility checklist
- ☐ Legally registered NGO authorised to work in the project country
- ☐ Primary objective is creation or expansion of a protected or conserved area meeting the species, forest or climate-habitat criteria
- ☐ Proposed area is currently unprotected under Rainforest Trust’s stated criteria
- ☐ Government support and IP/LC support with FPIC are secured or clearly planned
- ☐ Budget is not built as fixed-rate overhead; you are not asking mainly for long-term monitoring/research or large-scale tree planting
- ☐ For requests of USD 250,000 or more: you are aiming at a 1 March / 1 July / 1 October cycle and can submit a concept note about four months ahead
FCRA note for Indian applicants
Rainforest Trust awards USD as a US-based funder. Its Apply for Funding page checked on 23 Oct 2026 does not state FCRA. Receiving foreign contribution in India is a legal question separate from being invited to a full application. See our FCRA registration and prior permission service, and related notes on the FCRA bank account and FCRA renewal status, if foreign funds are part of your plan.
Foreign grant: Indian NGOs normally need FCRA registration or prior permission (FCRA 2010) to receive these funds. General information only, not legal advice.
How to apply, step by step
- Read the full criteria on the Rainforest Trust Apply for Funding page (checked 23 Oct 2026).
- Confirm your site is currently unprotected under the page’s criteria, and that government and IP/LC support with FPIC can be shown.
- Decide whether you are seeking a Feasibility Award, a Creation Award under USD 250,000 (rolling), or a USD 250,000+ award aimed at the next dated window (after 23 Oct 2026: 1 March 2027).
- Submit a Concept Note through the official form linked from that page (Asana form on the funder site). Concept notes are reviewed within 1–2 months.
- If invited, complete the detailed application via Rainforest Trust’s online portal. The public page does not publish a full post-invitation document list beyond the criteria.
- Questions listed on the official page: projects@rainforesttrust.org (reference only; NGOGrant does not contact funders for you).
For structuring a concept note and an itemized budget that avoids fixed-rate overhead language, use our NGO project proposal guide and project budget guide. Before you submit, run the grant application checklist and keep due-diligence papers ready with the NGO due diligence checklist.
Common mistakes
- Pitching general NGO programmes that are not primarily about creating or expanding a protected or conserved area.
- Assuming Biosphere, World Heritage or Ramsar status alone meets the “already protected” test — the apply page says those alone are not treated as official protection.
- Building the ask around fixed-rate overhead, long-term monitoring/research, or large-scale tree planting.
- Missing the dated cycle if you need USD 250,000 or more (next after 23 Oct 2026: 1 March 2027; concept note recommended four months ahead).
- Paying an intermediary “to apply” — Rainforest Trust states you never need to.
- Assuming an invitation or award solves FCRA for an Indian NGO — it does not.

Frequently asked questions
How much funding does Rainforest Trust offer?
Feasibility Awards average USD 10,000; in exceptional situations, amounts greater than USD 20,000 may be considered. Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards have no set maximum and are assessed individually. Awards of USD 250,000 and above use separate dated cycles. Funding is decided by Rainforest Trust and is not guaranteed.
Is Rainforest Trust funding rolling, or are there deadlines?
Feasibility Awards and Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards of less than USD 250,000 are accepted on a rolling basis and may be funded anytime throughout the year. Concept notes are accepted anytime and reviewed within 1–2 months. For awards of USD 250,000 and above, application deadlines are 1 March, 1 July and 1 October each calendar year; the next window after 23 Oct 2026 is 1 March 2027. Rainforest Trust recommends submitting a concept note four months before those large-award deadlines.
Can an Indian NGO apply for Rainforest Trust funding?
Applicants must be a legally registered non-government organisation authorised to conduct work in the country of the project. Rainforest Trust’s primary focus is the tropics and subtropics, but strong proposals from outside those areas that meet all other criteria will be considered. India is not named or excluded; fit depends on site criteria (species, forests, climate habitats), not on every district being eligible.
What will Rainforest Trust not fund?
It cannot fund fixed-rate overhead (itemized expenditure may be considered), long-term ecological monitoring or research, or large-scale habitat restoration such as tree planting. The proposed area must be currently unprotected in the sense Rainforest Trust describes (WDPA IUCN categories 1–6; Biosphere Reserve, World Heritage or Ramsar listing alone is not treated as official protection). Government and Indigenous Peoples / local community support and FPIC are required.
Do Indian NGOs need FCRA for a Rainforest Trust award?
Rainforest Trust is a US-based funder awarding USD. Its apply-for-funding page checked on 23 Oct 2026 does not state FCRA. Indian NGOs normally need FCRA registration or prior permission (FCRA 2010) to receive foreign contribution. General information only, not legal advice.
